Chairman's Message

Welcome to Australian Business Council Dubai (ABC), one of the leading business groups in the Middle East. ABC’s charter is to foster trade and business relationships between Australia and the Gulf Countries, with a particular focus on Dubai and the Northern Emirates of the UAE.
Relations between the UAE and Australia are very healthy. The UAE is an important market for both goods and services from Australia.

Bilateral relations are good, and there is a healthy tourist trade in both directions. The aim of the Australian Business Council Dubai is to provide a networking forum for members to help further develop business and trade ties between the two countries. Since its’ inception in 1993, The Australian Business Group in Dubai grew along with the Australian community in the region. The stature of the Group and the Australian business community was recognised in 2007 with the transition to a full Business Council. This change will give ABC a stronger voice in the wider Dubai business community, and help us to support our members’ business interests. A new Executive Committee was elected at the AGM in September 2007. The size of the committee has been increased from 12 to 15 to better support the larger calendar of events and activities planned for the coming year. Australian businesses in Dubai can avail themselves of Business Lunches, Special Interest Breakfasts, evening seminars and social events to gain access to information and build their networks. ABC's charter very much complements the sterling work done by Austrade and the various State Government offices in assisting Australian business people and Australian companies to succeed in the UAE and Gulf. ABC is very appreciative of the excellent working relationship we have with Austrade and the State Government offices in Dubai. This three-way synergy can only enhance the future successes of Australian businesses in the Gulf region. On the social front, we maintain regular communication with ANZA. In particular, the two organisations work together in organising the always-memorable Allied Pickfords Melbourne Cup Breakfast. Along with the Australia Day Ball, Melbourne Cup day is a highlight in the social calendar for our members. The calendar is to be further enhanced in 2008 with the AFL match between Collingwood and Adelaide in February. The ongoing economic development of the UAE continues to offer a wide range of business opportunities to Australian businesses. The development of Dubai is now being mirrored in Abu Dhabi, other emirates and nearby countries including Oman, Qatar and Bahrain. Through active participation in ABC activities, Australian Businesses can gain information and build relationships that will help in capitalising on these opportunities. We of course are an elected Committee and we always welcome suggestions and contributions from all of our members to support the ongoing development of the ABC. My sincere thanks to a hard working committee, our hard working secretariat and of course our very generous sponsors.

Phillip Biggs
