ABC Profile

The Australian Business Council is a non-profit organisation with the broad objective of providing a networking forum for ABC members to develop their business activities, promote trade, and in turn, deepen the relationship between Australia and the Gulf countries. Originally conceived as The Australian Business in the Gulf Group in 1993 by the then Australian Consul General and Senior Trade Commissioner, Robert Sheppard. Robert’s brief was to provide a networking forum in Dubai for a group of Australian businessmen utilising informal lunches and social events. Following a significant increase in the Australian business community in the Gulf, and a growing demand for a wider range of networking opportunities, the need for a formal organisation emerged. Robert Sheppard’s successor, Peter Deacon, formed an official volunteer committee that held its inaugural meeting on 31 August 1994. The Australian Business in the Gulf Group grew over the next decade in parallel with the burgeoning region. Membership opened to local branches of Australian companies, agents of Australian companies, companies or individuals with regular business relationships with Australia, and Australian citizens working in the Gulf and remains today, one of the leading business groups in the region. Early in 2007 it was decided to change and elevate the status of the business group to that of an official business council. On June 21 2007, The Australian Business in the Gulf Group officially became the Australian Business Council with a new and enhanced role within the Australian Business community in the Gulf.
